I like the draft so far. Davis a reach but you cant teach 4.3 at 230lbs. The knock on Charles coming out was ball protection. He turned out okay

I also like that we havent caved in to Miami with Albert. At this point Id rather keep him this year and lose him for nothing next.

Will be funny if Sanchez is actually cut and replaced by a 3rd rnd pick. He might be the only starting QB that Cassel is better than.

Johnson is really good at taking on blockers and shutting things down. He's a run stopping thumper that is a 2 down player. His pass coverage leaves a lot to be desired even though he runs a 4.7. Johnson read and reacts really well and is great at anticipating the snap. Although he didn't have a sack in 2012, he can get after the QB and collapse the pocket.

Everybody is giving Bills terrible grade for drafting Manuel. They could have traded back more and still had him I guess like the Chiefs with Poe. So I guess it isnt good at 16 but I think he is the best QB in this class

Yep! He also put up 31 reps at the combine so he's a strong bastard as well.

Sounds like he has the speed to develope his coverage skills

Ya probably, I read that he's not as fluid in the hips as he should be. He's going to need some coaching in that area.

I'm big fan out of what I seen out of Kelce so far. He's another Houston. He would've went much higher had it not been for character concerns.

I'm still a fan of Geno! I hope he plays with a chip on his shoulder for being looked over. He has a lot of talent and tools. I would've never thought he would've fallen to the 2nd # 39 overall. Bree's went in the 2nd. Russell Wilson went in the 3rd. It's looking like Reid and Dorsey got this decision right. Time will tell! I wasn't looking for him to start right away. I was thinking he would benefit from a couple years on the bench learning like Rodgers did.

Seems like a great draft so far. Keeping Albert is probably best case too. Let Fisher play RT and adjust from the Mac to the NFL. If Albert has another great year at LT there will be someone in the market for him again next year.

And sucks for Geno and Wilson where they went. Teams just set up to fail.

I wouldn't mind seeing us draft Rodgers, or trading for Foles. Maybe even just wait out the Eagles to cut him in camp... He knows Reid's system anyways and won't see the field this year either way.

PostSubject: Sanders Commings scouting report   Sat Apr 27, 2013 2:13 pm

Strengths

At first glance, Commings looks more like a safety than a cornerback. At 6'0" and 216 pounds, Commings has the size to be an extremely physical cornerback in the NFL.

His physicality really shows up on tape, too. He does a fantastic job when in press coverage bumping receivers off their routes. He's also got great hands and the ability to extend from his frame to make a play on the ball.

Weaknesses

While Commings' size is a strength, it is also a weakness. His size limits his quickness where he isn't effective playing off the line of scrimmage in man coverage.

He needs to improve his overall footwork and his instincts aren't anywhere near elite. There are also off-field issues surrounding Commings' character and injury issues that teams will be concerned about.

Tools

For a man of Commings' size, he is still rather athletic. During the 2013 NFL combine, Commings produced a time of 4.41 seconds in the 40-yard dash. He also had a vertical jump of 34.5".

While neither of these results were top performances, they were still impressive for a cornerback as big as Commings.

Intangibles

There are a few concerns revolving around Commings. For starters, a cracked fibula forced him to redshirt when he first got to Georgia.

On top of that, Commings was also arrested back in 2012 for domestic violence charges.

System

Commings was used mainly in press coverage when playing for the Bulldogs.

Playing the Ball

Commings does a surprisingly good job at extending his arms and making a play on the ball away from his frame.

With a background in baseball, Commings is surprisingly talented at playing the ball. He has decent hands and the ability to extend his arms and make plays away from his frame.

Commings is athletic enough to be a factor in 50-50 situations and jump balls. While he might not always get the interception, he does a good job at getting his hands on the ball and breaking up passes.

Against the Run

Commings shows aggressiveness when shedding blockers and making a play in the run game. However, he is too inconsistent with his effort and lacks in the instincts to be a real threat against the run.

He needs to improve his overall hustle to help a team with run support.

Man

Where Commings really shines the most is in man coverage when he's playing right at the line of scrimmage. He can use his physicality to jam receivers at the line of scrimmage and be a hassle to opposing quarterbacks.

However, Commings lacks the quickness in his feet and fluidity in his hips to play off coverage. He bites too easily on routes and struggles to turn and run with receivers.

Zone

Didn't play much zone in college, but he lacks the awareness to be overly effective in zone coverage. He struggles to watch the quarterbacks eyes and simply doesn't have a good feel for the players around him.

Tackling

When Commings can get a clean hit on an opponent he has the physicality to make a big hit. However, Commings struggles with consistency and hustle when asked to chase down the ball-carrier in both the run and pass game.

Technique

Whoever drafts Commings is going to need to work on his overall technique before he's ready to make an impact for a defense.

Commings overall technique needs to be improved for him to really make an impact in the NFL. He struggles with his backpedal and keeping his balance when asked to plant his foot and drive on the ball.

He does do a good job at breaking up passes, but it would be nice to see more of those passes turned into interceptions. Commings does have the athleticism to make up for his technique at times, but not consistently.

Future Role/Scheme Versatility

Until Commings improves his footwork it will be hard for him to play anything except press coverage in the NFL. Look for an NFL team to use Commings to help cover more physical receivers in the league.

Chiefs take C Eric Cush from Cal in 6th round #170. This seems like a wasted pick. Much rather would've like to have had Swenke.

Rumor was that KC wanted Matt Barkley in the 4th at #99. Philly jumped in front and took him. If they wanted Barkley then why didn't they take him at #96 and then select Davis at 99. Again, some were saying that Davis may not have even been selected at all.

Chiefs take DE Mike Catapano from Princeton in 7th round. Ran 4.65, benched 33 reps, 7.09 3 cone drill, 4.31 short shuttle. He only weighs 270 pounds, is he an OLB or a DE?

Found this write up about him.

"Mike Catapano is impressive! Big, athletic 270 lbs pass rusher with a 7 foot wingspan who runs a 4.65 40…solid both as a run defender as well as an edge rusher, great size, speed combo. Catapano is a leader (voted captain the last 2 years by his teammates) and led his team to an impressive turn around for his senior season. He has a relentless work ethic and is a guy who doesn’t take plays off (won’t ever ask to be taken off the field due to fatigue). Led Ivy League in sacks, tackles for losses and forced fumbles in 2012. Most sacks in Ivy League since 1998 (12 sacks in 10 games…as well as 16 tackles for losses) Rare talent/work ethic combination. Just won 1st team all Ivy League Honors and is pretty much a lock to win Ivy League Defensive Player Of The Year. Top D1 talent just needs the exposure. No character questions here, mentally strong with Ivy League smarts. Huge sleeper draft pick here for an NFL team looking for big, fast and athletic pass rusher."

@Jacobs71: Reid on Nico:" He’s a tremendous blitzer; they didn’t ask him to cover much, so he’ll work on that when he gets here"

@Jacobs71: Reid on Nico:"We’re going to put him at the Mike Linebacker spot and he’ll compete with Akeem."

@Jacobs71: Reid on Commings:"What you see with Sanders is a big, physical press corner (and) safety, he’s done both at Georgia last year and this year"

@Jacobs71: Reid on Commings:"He had two games this year where he played the safety spot. He fits in to what we do in both spots"

@Jacobs71: Reid on Commings:"“We’ll probably try him at free safety and let him work there, see how he picks things up and then we’ll go from there."

@Jacobs71: Reid on Commings:"You know, he’s a great baseball player; he was a centerfielder in baseball, so you know he can track the ball."

@Jacobs71: Reid on Kush:" I would compare him to (Jason) Kelce, the kid I had in Philadelphia because he can get out and pull for you"

@Jacobs71: Reid on Kush:"He can slip to the second level – he has the quickness and athletic ability to do that. He’s a very intelligent and tough kid"

@Jacobs71: Reid on Wilson:" He's a big, tall kid that just has a knack for blocking. He’s also a good catcher of the football"

@Jacobs71: Reid on Wilson:"You can move him up onto a tight end position or a slot position and ask him to block, he’s capable of doing that."

@Jacobs71: Reid on Catapano:"We're going to use as an outside linebacker"

@Jacobs71: Reid on Catapano:"Probably more of what we’ve done with Tamba here in the past, more of a rush, outside backer."

@Jacobs71: Reid on Catapano:"You’re looking at a good, solid football player who’s very solid, very intense, and loves to play the game."
