PostSubject: Chris Canty visiting the Chiefs    Mon Feb 11, 2013 3:02 pm

Other teams are purging their rosters in order to become compliant with the salary cap and the Kansas City Chiefs should gladly be there to scoop them up. One such name is defensive lineman Chris Canty, who was released by the New York Giants last week.

Does free agent Chris Canty spark your interest? The New York Giants released the defensive lineman last week and now he's visiting the Kansas City Chiefs. This according to Mike Garafolo of USA Today:

Interesting. Very interesting. You know what position Canty played in New York? Right defensive end, same as Glenn Dorsey, who is of course a free-agent-to-be on March 12. We haven't heard rumblings as to whether Dorsey will be back but the general thinking outside the team is that he won't be. There's also the issue of the large sum of money that's due to Tyson Jackson.

In other words, the Chiefs may have two defensive end spots to fill. That should be a big focus in the 2013 NFL free agency period.

Canty was the Cowboys fourth round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. I remember wanting the Chiefs to pick him up at the start of the 2009 NFL free agency period but he signed with the Giants (fairly quickly after free agency started, if I recall).

Before he was cut by the Giants, Ed Valentine of Big Blue View wrote:

As the Giants revamp their defense in 2013 the essential question with Canty comes down to this -- has he been part of the problem, or is he part of the solution? I believe he is part of the solution.

And Giants coach Tom Coughlin said of him after his release:

"Chris Canty is a high-character, highly intelligent young man. He distinguished himself a year ago down the stretch for a number of reasons. One, the quality of his play, and two, is the toughness he displayed, which was a great statement about the quality of the individual."

We'll see how this one goes. I'm intrigued.

Canty has already been cut so he can sign anywhere. Guys like Dwayne Bowe and Branden Albert won't become free agents until March 12 (and boy I hope they don't).

6'7" 317! Would be an awesome addition. He is 30, but should still have a few years left in him. Nice stop gap at least.

I had no idea that Chris Canty was so damn big. Signing him could mean the end of Tyson Jackson.

I'd like to see Jackson's contract reworked. Maybe release him and let him test the market, but try signing him again.

Canty would be a fantastic signing. I would love to see Canty, Poe, and Jackson as our starting D-line next season. Could you imagine the size of our D-line for goal line situations? Canty, Poe, Powe, Jackson, Pitoitua. Thats MASSIVE!
