PostSubject: Chiefs coaching staff rumors   Fri Jan 04, 2013 9:37 pm

First topic message reminder :

Reid will take hands-on approach with Chiefs offense
By Jason La Canfora | CBS Sports NFL Insider
January 4, 2013 8:12 pm ET

New Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid is expected to be more hands-on running the Chiefs offense, including playcalling, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Reid is mulling his new staff and has considered names like former Browns head coach Pat Shurmur, but, at this point, is leaning toward a younger staff, given his more direct approach with this offense.

Longtime offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg will not be going to Kansas City with Reid and at this point, it's unlikely longtime offensive line coach/defensive coordinator Juan Castillo will, either. Castillo is drawing interest in both of those roles he once served under Reid. Defensively, there have been rumors of Monte Kiffin as Reid's coordinator on that side of the ball, but that is very unlikely sources said (Reid has thought highly of Ed Donatell, now coaching the 49ers defensive backs, in the past, sources said, and Jacksonville's Mel Tucker could be an option as well).

On the personnel side, Green Bay executive John Dorsey is all but certain to serve as general manager under Reid -- Reid will report directly to owner Clark Hunt -- and the team will add other personnel men as well, as the Chiefs franchise is remade following the departure of former general manager Scott Pioli.

The guy has a ton of experience on that side of the ball and is surely going to keep the 3-4 so Im all for him.

I do like that as well. Means we are not going to complete rebuild. I just don't know that this guy is worth a shit. Hopefully he will install a 1 gap 3-4 and roll with it.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the years be was DC, it was by title only. There is no way Mangini wasn't running the defense his way. Also, he must be a pretty good coach if Herm, Mangini, and Rex who are all defensive guys kept him around. He should be well versed on the defensive side and can bring that all together to do what he feels is best his first real chance at DC.

Tony Sparano to interview with Chiefs for o-line job, according to report

By Joel Thorman on Jan 13, 12:47p 12

The Kansas City Chiefs announced their new coaching staff on Friday but a couple of positions, including offensive line, weren't filled in yet. Per a report from ESPN, former Dolphins coach Tony Sparano will interview for that job.

There have been indications that the Kansas City Chiefs are interested in Cleveland Browns assistant coach George Warhop for the role of offensive line coach.

More: Chiefs will introduce new GM John Dorsey on Monday

Maybe that's the case. Maybe not.

I say that because of this:

Per @mortreport, Tony Sparano is scheduled to interview Monday for the offensive line coach job with Kansas City Chiefs.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 13, 2013

The Chiefs didn't name an offensive line coach when they made their coaching staff announcement on Friday. It was initially believed that Juan Castillo, who coached the offensive line (and, uh, defense) under Andy Reid in Philadelphia, would be a candidate for the job. Then came the Warhop rumors.

Now we're on Sparano.

Many of you should know Sparano. He was the Dallas Cowboys offensive line coach and assistant head coach from 2003-07 before taking the Miami Dolphins head coaching job. He was let go after the 2011 season, joining the New York Jets as offensive coordinator last season. That means he was in New York with Bob Sutton, the Chiefs new defensive coordinator.

There are reports that the Cowboys are also interested in Sparano. The same Cowboys that hired Monte Kiffin, who the Chiefs reportedly wanted to hire.

So ... whaddya think?

Sparano! Really? Another Parcell's-Jets-Miami reject that couldn't hack it.

Sprano must have been a decent OL coach to get promoted to HC. I'm completely fine with the hire.

Sparano is a fantastic hire as an o-line coach. He has the head coaching experience which will also help with his demeanor and gives him more respect and credibility with the players.

I'm sure Pioli does go back, unless the Falcons offer him a job.. but I'm sure he'd rather go to the Patriots.

Thats a great hire for ST coach. We havnt had a return game that anyone has had to worry about really since we had Dante Hall. Thats such a momentum shift for a game. More importantly, he will prevent other teams from having that very momentum shift.

I know im probably dreaming here..but Devin Hester was pretty pissed about Lovie being fired. Now that his ST coach is here maybe he'll seek a release?

He's up there in age..but if we can get a solid 1-2 years out of him, im down.

Toub hire really excites me. He is a damn good coach! Now if he could just lure Hester with him. How about that Hunt being cheap? He just allowed Toub to be the highest paid ST coach in the league!

Andy Heck is the Chiefs new offensive line coach, according to reports

By Joel Thorman on Jan 16, 7:10a 47

The Kansas City Chiefs had one last spot to fill on their coaching staff as of the last update -- offensive line coach. Per a report, the Chiefs have their man -- Andy Heck.

The Chiefs have reportedly hired Andy Heck to be their new offensive line coach, according to a couple of reports.

Andy Heck new Chiefs Oline coach.
— Bill Maas (@BillMaas) January 16, 2013

I'm reporting that Andy Heck is Kansas City's new offensive line coach. Story coming ASAP at FOXSports.com
— Alex Marvez (@alexmarvez) January 16, 2013

Heck comes from the Jacksonville Jaguars where he has been their offensive line coach since 2006.

Heck was a 1989 first round pick out of Notre Dame as an offensive lineman, winning the 1988 National Championship for the Irish.

He played 12 years in the league -- five with the Seattle Seahawks, five with the Chicago Bears and two with the Washington Redskins. 2000 was his final season as a player.

He spent a few years coaching at Virginia after that before joining the Jaguars as assistant offensive line coach in 2004. By 2006 he was promoted to offensive line coach, a position he's held ever since.

Eugene Chung, who worked with Reid in Philly, is the assistant offensive line coach.

At least three other names were attached to the job: Juan Castillo, Reid's former o-line coach in Philly, George Warhop, the Browns offensive line coach, and Tony Sparano, who interviewed on Monday.

Speaking of the offensive line, see what BJ Kissel thinks about Branden Albert's future here:

Well, well now! What the Heck? I shouldn't have bitched about Sparano I guess! Hecks O line did have a pretty good year in 11 with Jones Drew having the rushing title. They sucked balls in 12 including allowing 50 sacks. Heck was a 1st round pick and played for 12 years. Hopefully it will be ok.

"Jaguars offensive line coach Andy Heck has been hired to coach the same position for the Kansas City Chiefs.

As reported by Fox Sports, Heck will join coach Andy Reid’s new staff after being on the Jaguars staff the last seven years.

Heck is the second Jaguars assistant to leave the staff – tight ends coach Bobby Johnson was hired by Detroit on Monday.

The Jaguars’ offensive line struggled in 2012, allowing many to speculate that Heck would not be retained even before Mike Mularkey was fired last week. The Jaguars allowed 50 sacks and went through several different starting combinations because of performance and injury issues.

The pluses on Heck’s resume were Maurice Jones-Drew’s rushing title in 2011. But the Jaguars running game never got going in 2012 because of Jones-Drew’s injury."

For the most part Heck's lines have been good. Always a great rushing team... They just haven't had a QB since Mark Brunell. Sacks are common when your QB is young and/or sucks.

Can't complain about that hire. If he was THE Secondary coach, might be a different story. Should be able to teach our guys a thing or two to help make them better.
