Kansas City Chiefs: 5 Players Who Should See Their Roles Expand in 2012

By Bill Robbins
(Featured Columnist) on April 9, 2012

1. DE Allen Bailey

Last season, Allen Bailey's play was sort of like a solar eclipse: He wasn't on the field a lot, but when he was, he made some pretty big plays for this defense.

I expect for Romeo Crennel to plug Bailey into his defense more often this season in order to take advantage of the versatility that he will provide the team.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bailey is able to pick up at least seven sacks and become another solid pass-rushing threat on this KC defense in 2012.

2. WR Jonathan Baldwin

Many were expecting big things out of rookie wideout Jonathan Baldwin last season.

Instead, he ended up with just 254 receiving yards and one touchdown in just three starts for the entire year.

This season should be a different story for the former University of Pittsburgh star.

Assuming that he can stay out of any locker room fights with teammates this year, he should be starting opposite Dwayne Bowe in Week 1 and will likely make a much bigger impact with the Chiefs in his sophomore campaign.

3. C Rodney Hudson

When the Chiefs drafted center Rodney Hudson back in 2010, they had hopes that he would one day take over that position on a permanent basis.

After serving as a backup last season, Hudson appears to be the heir apparent to aging center Casey Wiegmann.

All signs are pointing to Hudson being the Week 1 starting center for KC, which will obviously give him a much larger role than his one start he received as a backup in his rookie campaign.

The former first-team All-American was one of the best offensive linemen in Florida State history and is now ready to make his mark on the NFL.

4. LB Corey Greenwood

Corey Greenwood has been one of the better special teams players for the Chiefs over the past two seasons.

Unfortunately, he has yet to see any action at his inside linebacker position in the 3-4 base defense that KC currently runs.

However, I expect that to change this year.

5. DT Jerrell Powe

Jerrell Powe is easily the biggest question mark out of any of the players on this list.

Last season, he played in just one game and did absolutely nothing for this defense.

Once regarded as a first-round talent, there is still a good chance that Powe will see his role expand this season, considering how thin the Chiefs currently are at the nose tackle position.

He might not be anything more than a rotational-type player this year, but that would still be a big step up from his rookie season in 2011, when he was inactive for nearly every game.

After Kansas City recently re-signed the Concordia University product to a four-year deal earlier this offseason, I could see Greenwood getting some playing time on defense, especially when the Chiefs are playing in the nickel.

I don't really see Greenwood getting much time.

Bailey and Baldwin are the 2 I wanna see step up the most from this list. I mean we could lose Bowe and Dorsey next year. So if they step up big it wouldn't hurt as much.

Jalil Brown is another guy that could step up this season.

I think Stanzi is the most intriguing. Pioli and the coaches like him allot. Maybe he will get a chance to show off a bit.

Chiefs sound pretty interested in taking a QB in the first part of the draft..specifically Tannehill. Hopefully Weeden is the pick in the 2nd/3rd if we dont land Tannehill in the 1st.

You do realize that Weeden is 28 years old? He will be 29 in October. His career will on the downside before it ever really takes off.

True, but if you have a franchise QB for 5-7 years it gives you plenty of time to wait for THE best QB prospect you can possibly find.

Do u think he's starter material from day one or do you think he will have the rookie curve? If he starts from a rookie level, I don't know he makes a lot of sense unless you just want a quality number 2. If he's ahead of the curve then ya I can see it.

Hell I keep reading Weeden IS the 3rd best QB this year. Everyone just keeps knocking his age. They say if he was 5 years younger no one would be talking Tannehill right now.

Matt Cassel will be 30 in May and Weeden is far more talented and has far more potential than Cassel. Weeden could possibly play til he's 40 since he has a ton of football left in him. If we can get 5-10 years of good/great QB play out of Weeden he is worth every bit of our 2nd or 3rd round pick. If there's an Andy Dalton in this draft, Weeden is it.

Patriots | Willing to listen to offers for backup QBs
Thu, 19 Apr 2012 13:12:55 -0700

New England Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio indicated the team would be willing to listen to offers from other team for QBs Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett.

Mallett is a guy I'd trade for. Whats he gonna cost maybe a 3rd and another pick next year?

I met him at the post office. He had on a Chiefs sweatshirt and he had a slip that said 'Hudson' on it so I asked him if he was Rodney and we just started talking. I told him I was banging the drums to draft him in the 2nd round last year (which is the truth) and then I asked if he was gonna lock down the starting center spot. Hudson was real cool and humble about it and just said we'd have to wait and see. We then talked for a bit about his plans to go to Hawaii after the current offseason conditioning program ends. He then shook my hand and told me it was nice meeting me. I'm really gonna be rooting for the guy to succeed now.

I'd rather trade that pick for Mallet than draft Weeden.
