that is good news if true. Fix the trenches first. Winston, Nicks, and Soliai would do that in a hurry. that would open up all kinds of possabilities at 11 in the draft. If we were to land those 3 in FA the best move might be to try and trade down and pick up more picks if t. richardson doesnt fall into your lap.

If we got Winston and Soliai that would go a long ways toward fixing allot of our problems. I think Nicks will end somewhere else with a huge contract. Grubbs would be great though.

Cambells gone... back up in Chicago... 1 step closer to Cassel starting next season.

However its being reported that Peyton Hillis has sceduled a visit to KC. Thats encouraging... but not what I would call a major move. At least he would be an upgrade over Jones and Battle. Maybe thats the Peyton that Clark was talking about all along.

Mike Tolbert set to Visit KC also. I hope we can at least get one of these FA's to sign.. but they all have other visits scheduled also....so I'm not gonna get to excited.

Hopefully get Winston and either Hillis or Tolbert signed. Don't care much for Carlson at TE. But will see what happens.

Also about Cassel there are rumors he wants out after Pioli openly said he wanted Manning. And rumors about us trading him to Seattle. Don't know how much is true or speculation. But if that is the case I have no idea who will be playing QB for us next season.

Trade him and sign Brady Quinn if we can't land Orton or Manning. Solidify the rest of the team and either reach on Tannahil or plan on drafting one next year unless Quinn or Stanzi break out.

I think that Stanzi if given the chance could be an above average game manager.

I would trade his ass in a flash then resign Orton! No qualms at all.

The Kansas City Chiefs are showing interest in free-agent OT Eric Winston (Texans) but have not scheduled a visit at this point.

Please happen, but I hear 10 teams are interested.

I dont know where you heard that from but Finnegan just got a 5 year 50 million dollar deal. I would expect Carr will get something close to that. Carr is 3 years younger and probably not in his prime yet.

Chiefs are pushing for Mike Tolbert

By Bill Williamson

Let’s not go ahead and assume Peyton Hillis will be a Chief.

The Kansas City Chiefs have other interests. San Diego running back Mike Tolbert will visit the Chiefs on Wednesday. Several teams are interested in Tolbert.

The Chiefs (who are also visiting with Houston right tackle Eric Winston and Seattle tight end John Carlson) reportedly are visiting with Peyton Hillis. He could have an advantage in Kansas City over Tolbert because he played for new Kansas City offensive coordinator Brian Daboll in Cleveland and excelled under Daboll in 2010.

However, Tolbert is no slouch. He is an outstanding power runner, who is also good as a blocker, receiver and on special teams. Both Hillis and Tolbert would be a bigger option to pair with the speedy Jamaal Charles.

Losing Tolbert would further weaken the Chargers. They want Tolbert back, but the fact that he is visiting Kansas City is a sign that he is more than willing to leave San Diego.

Losing Tolbert to a division rival would be a crushing blow, considering the Chargers just lost receiver Vincent Jackson to Tampa Bay.

Chiefs going after Eric Winston

By Bill Williamson

The Kansas City Chiefs might be ready to spend some big money in free agency. ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting the Chiefs are one of three teams that have a visit set up with standout right tackle Eric Winston who was a surprise salary-cap dump in Houston

Schefter reports Miami and St. Louis are also looking to visit with Winston. He would be a terrific fit in Kansas City. He’d be a major upgrade over Barry Richardson, who was the weak link of Kansas City’s offensive line. Winston would solidify a unit that has been in flux the past few years. The University of Miami product started every game for the past five years in Houston.

Signing Winston would also likely allow the Chiefs to concentrate on signing either a defensive tackle or linebacker in the first round of the draft.

The Chiefs -- who have franchise receiver Dwayne Bowe and who have added cornerback Stanford Routt -- have a lot of salary cap room and should be able to sign Winston if they chose to. The Chiefs are entertaining Seattle tight end John Carlson on Tuesday.

In other AFC West news: •Oakland free agent Michael Bush bashed folks for reporting that he is visiting the Cardinals. Bush earlier tweeted that he was in Arizona, but said nothing about visiting the Cardinals.
•Schefter is reporting that Denver free agent Eddie Royal does not yet have a deal done with the Redskins. It has been reported elsewhere that the deal is done. Yet, Schefter said both sides are working to finalize a deal. It makes sense. Royal performed well for Washington coach Mike Shanahan as a rookie in Denver in 2008.
•The Raiders have officially announced they have cut tight end Kevin Boss. His release was first reported Monday. His agent tweeted earlier Tuesday he expected his client to be cut Wednesday.
•Schefter reported that the Broncos were one of a few teams to opt to take the extra $1.6 million in salary cap room next year instead of this year. Most teams were given the extra cap room because cap money was taken away from the Redskins and the Cowboys because of cap infractions. The Raiders were one of two teams not to be rewarded extra cap room because of a lesser infraction. The Raiders didn’t face any more penalties.
•Yet another veteran guard is available. Carolina cut Travelle Wharton. If the Chargers want a veteran to replace the recently retired Kris Dielman, they’ll have their choice. However, the team will likely put Tyronne Green at the spot.
•Former Oakland starter Jason Campbell has agreed to a one-year deal with Chicago, according to Schefter. I will have more thoughts on this deal later Wednesday.

Brandon Carr getting big interest

By Bill Williamson

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting San Francisco is battling Dallas for Kansas City cornerback Brandon Carr. There is little chance Carr will return to Kansas City. The Chiefs chose instead to sign former Oakland cornerback Stanford Routt last month.

If Carr goes to San Francisco, perhaps Oakland could get in on 49ers’ free agent cornerback Carlos Rogers. The Rams are talking to Saints cornerback Tracy Porter. He has been considered a possible candidate for Oakland, because he played for new Raiders coach Dennis Allen in New Orleans.

In other AFC West news:

Oakland free-agent Michael Bush tweeted that he has just arrived in Arizona. He did not indicate whether he is visiting with the Cardinals. However, with free agency open, it’s a possibility. UPDATE: Bush later tweeted that he is in Arizona to train.

NFL.com is reporting Kansas City quarterback Kyle Orton is getting interest from Washington and Dallas. The Redskins are expected to draft Robert Griffin III, so Orton would likely be a backup in both spots. Kansas City has said it would like to see Orton return and compete with Matt Cassel. If Orton doesn’t opt to stay, perhaps it is because he thinks Cassel will be the starter in Kansas City.

NFL.com is reporting Oakland receiver Chaz Schilens will visit Arizona and the Jets. Schilens is from the Phoenix area.

ESPN's John Clayton is reporting Washington is talking to Denver receiver Eddie Royal. That makes total sense. Washington coach Mike Shanahan drafted Royal in 2008, and Royal excelled under Shanahan as a rookie.

Looking to improve offense, Chiefs set visits with four free agents

By ADAM TEICHER

The Kansas City Star

Former San Diego Chargers running back Mike Tolbert is one of the free agents scheduled to meet with the Chiefs.

The Chiefs appeared intent on improving their offense on the first day of free agency Tuesday, setting up visits with four players who could help improve one of the league’s lowest scoring teams.

The Chiefs scheduled visits with running backs Mike Tolbert of San Diego and Peyton Hillis of Cleveland, tight end John Carlson of Seattle and offensive tackle Eric Winston, who was recently released by Houston.

Tolbert and Carlson were to be in Kansas City today. The timing of the other visits was unclear.

One of Kansas City’s free-agent goals was to find a bigger running back to rotate with Jamaal Charles and few come bigger than the 243-pound Tolbert and the 250-pound Hillis. Tolbert, played four seasons for the Chargers, sharing time as the featured back for the past two seasons with Ryan Mathews.

He was San Diego’s leading rusher in 2010 with 735 yards. But Tolbert was also versatile for San Diego. He caught 25 passes in 2010 and 54 last season.

Hillis played two seasons for Denver and two for Cleveland. His best season happened in 2010 for the Browns, whose offensive coordinator was Brian Daboll. Daboll recently became the coordinator for the Chiefs.

Hillis rushed for 1,177 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2010 and also caught 61 passes. Bothered by injuries last season, he played in only 10 games and ran for 587 yards.

The Chiefs received little from their tight ends in the passing game last season after losing Tony Moeaki for the season with a knee injury. The Chiefs have said they believe Moeaki will be ready to play when next season starts, but Carlson would give them some insurance in case that doesn’t happen or a second receiving tight end to pair with Moeaki if he does.

The Chiefs have a hole at right tackle, where last year’s starter, Barry Richardson, is an unrestricted free agent. Winston, who started the last six years for the Texans, is capable of immediately stepping in as the starter.

Improving the offense was an off-season priority for the Chiefs, who finished next to last in the league in scoring last season. Entering the off-season, six of their seven highest-paid players play on defense.

At least two of the Chiefs free agents set up visits. Cornerback Brandon Carr and quarterback Kyle Orton were to visit with the Dallas Cowboys.

The Chiefs were unable to sign neither of their top two potential free agents, Carr and wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, forcing them to make a choice between the two. They opted for Bowe, making him the franchise player and signing Stanford Routt to take Carr’s place in the starting lineup.

The Chiefs had said they would like to re-sign Orton to compete with Matt Cassel for a starting job. But Orton apparently wasn’t interested, even though he would be a backup to Tony Romo if he signs with the Cowboys.

Orton called the Chiefs Cassel’s team immediately after the season’s final game against Denver.

Another possible challenger to Cassel was taken off the market when Oakland’s Jason Campbell signed to play for the Bears. Campbell once played in Washington for Jim Zorn, now the Chiefs quarterbacks coach.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs declined to make minimum contract offers to their potential exclusive rights free agents, quarterback Tyler Palko and safety Reshard Langford. Both players are now free to sign with other teams.

Me to buddy! I like Tolbert more b/c hes got nice hands out of the backfield and hasn't been beat up like Hillis has. I have my doubts on Orton now though. Although, he may just be driving his price up with visiting the Cowboys and Skins. He did say that he would like to be back. The Skins might be looking to bench RG3 and bring him along slowly. Orton could be a 1 or 2 year stop gap until RG3 is ready to go. Tolbert, Winston, and Soliai would be enough to make me jism uncontrollably! Those 3 plus Routt would be a pretty strong FA haul and finally give Pioli the right to say he did something in FA. I want Orton back so bad I can taste it. Trade Cassell to the Hawks for a 3rd and let his get on down the road is what I would do. If Cassell wants to be traded, I would accommodate him no prob!

Carl Nicks on deck for Buccaneers

By Pat Yasinskas

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn’t waste much time celebrating their acquisition of prized wide receiver Vincent Jackson on Tuesday night.

They didn’t have time because they had to get to the airport to pick up New Orleans guard Carl Nicks. The Bucs are expected to go hard after Nicks, who did receive an offer from the Saints that he termed "respectable." But the fact that Nicks was willing to fly to Tampa late Tuesday night for a Wednesday visit at One Buccaneer Place is a pretty strong indication that Tampa Bay has given signs it may be willing to make Nicks the league’s highest-paid guard.

The Bucs still have plenty of cap room and the fact that Jackson jumped to Tampa Bay so quickly could be a sign that it’s about to become a destination spot for free agents. The fact that Florida doesn’t have a state income tax is also a selling point, but giving free agents the impression that new coach Greg Schiano is on the verge of turning the franchise around makes the Bucs even more attractive.

Landing Nicks after Jackson would be a huge coup for the Buccaneers. Jackson was viewed by almost everyone as the top receiver in free agency. Nicks is viewed by many as the premier guard in the league.

Jackson is 29 and Nicks is 26, so it’s pretty obvious the Bucs are targeting free agents that are still in their prime. That wasn’t always the path taken back when the Bucs last were a strong player in free agency. Former coach Jon Gruden and general manager Bruce Allen often signed players in their 30s and the results were mixed.

That’s one reason the franchise adopted a policy of building through the draft under current general manager Mark Dominik. That philosophy is still in place. But, after sitting still in free agency last year and going 4-12, the Bucs realized they need to supplement what they build through the draft with some free agents.

Look we can hope and oohh and ahhh over all these visits were getting. When it comes down to it, Eric Winston wont be here, Tolbert may come here, Orton wont be back, and Hillis may come if Tolbert dont. We arent going to spend shit for cap this offseason because Clark doesnt have to til next season. We have to resign Bowe and Albert next season. Albert wont be demanding that much since he's not elite..Bowe likely will but I'd pay him in a frontloaded contract. We will still have plenty of money to spend.

If Carr really does sign for even a million more than what we payed Routt then Clark and Pioli are fucking morons. When it comes down to it, I see this team making 1 MAYBE 2 DECENT signings..no great signings. No difference making signings. We can sit here in denial all we want, but this team is going nowhere. 8-8 is what Clark is striding for..and thats just sad..

I think Albert will get 5 to 6 million a year anyway. He may not be elite but he's no damn slouch either and maybe this is the year that Albert really turns it on to get paid. Tackles rarely hit the market so somebody will pay for someone like Albert who is still young and developing. We have to sign Bowe and Dorsey long term if they decide to keep both. Colquit will be a FA and likely will fetch a decent payday. If all 4 of those come back and we have to assume they will, that's quite a bit of money! U turn around in 14 and have to deal with Jackson, Arenas, Moeaki, Dex, and K. Lewis.
