With the preseason opener five days away, Coach Todd Haley said he’s spent “zero” time pondering Friday’s game against Tampa Bay. “We will be ready to play on Friday, but we are concerned about Buffalo on September 11th,” Haley said of the regular-season opener. Chiefs RapidReports

With 85 players now on the roster, 83 should be available for the Monday afternoon practice. Only WR Jonathan Baldwin (right hamstring) and DE Glenn Dorsey (left knee) were not taking part in the short morning walkthrough. Coach Todd Haley will have his team in shoulder pads. Chiefs RapidReports

Five things to watch for tonight

PASS RUSH: The Chiefs are in trouble if Tamba Hali is the only
pass rusher opponents fear, but Wallace Gilberry has looked good in
camp. Keep an eye on rookies Justin Houston and Allen Bailey, as well as
now-healthy second-year guy Cameron Sheffield.

HOT HANDS:
The Chiefs won’t unveil much of their passing game
against the Bucs, and it’s possible that neither Steve Breaston nor
Jonathan Baldwin will play. But with those two, plus Dwayne Bowe and
Jerheme Urban, they go four-deep in high-quality receivers.

BACKUP QB: Matt Cassel is the undisputed top gun, but beyond that
the picture is muddy. The Chiefs hope Tyler Palko or rookie Ricky
Stanzi can handle the No. 2 job. If neither distinguishes himself
tonight, bringing in a veteran backup is not out of the question.

LINE DEPTH: The Chiefs are thin on offensive-line reserves. It’s
time for guard Darryl Harris (top at left), a developmental prospect the
last two years, to step it up. Tackle Jared Gaither, obtained Thursday,
might fit into the picture eventually but won’t play tonight.

TYSON JACKSON:
The Chiefs have been patient with their No. 3 overall
pick from 2009, but they won’t wait forever. Don’t expect Jackson , a
defensive lineman out of LSU, to be benched if he doesn’t light it up,
but he does need to start showing signs of life.

you shouldnt expect any rookies to shine with less than 2 weeks offseason. plus it being a terrible game plan to evaluate. hard to do anything when your plan is run, run, run, punt.

There was nothing to take from this game because almost no one played. One positive was Baldwin's amazing catch. I know he was out of bounds and it wasn't a reception, but the ball never did hit the ground.

I kinda stopped watching. But when I was still watching, Thomas Jones, Palko, and Copper were the only ones to do anything. Sucked that pretty much no one played.

Todd Haley Postgame Comments 8/12

By PR Staff

Posted 11 hours ago

Opening Statement: “We’ve got one under our belt. It didn’t go
exactly the way we wanted it to go. Every time we come out here,
especially in our own stadium, we’d like to come out on the winning end.
That didn’t occur tonight for a number of different reasons. The number
one was turning the ball over early, which will get you beat most times
in the NFL – a good lesson learned there for a bunch of these guys. Not
being able to protect your quarterback will get you beat most times,
not tackling will get you beat most times in the NFL. I thought those
were the most glaring deficiencies out there tonight. There were a lot
missed tackles; I don’t know what the number was, but just looking from
the sideline, it was a lot. Turning the ball over is a problem. So we
have a lot of work to do. We knew we had a lot of work to do coming into
this game. They’re going to get a little time off tomorrow to recover…a
bunch of those guys played a bunch of snaps…and then we’ll be back at
it Sunday in St. Joe, back at it early in the morning and practicing at
3:00.”

Did you see this coming today? “I don’t think you ever see that coming.
You don’t want to do that, especially on your home turf. That being
said, that’s the first one, not the last one. What’s important is that
our guys recognize they have a lot of work ahead of them and a short
time to do it. Our goal is to be ready to go on September 11th here in
Arrowhead and we have a lot of things to work on and a short time to do
it.”

On playing the reserves more than the starters: “I’ve said all
along that we’re going to need some of these young guys, a handful of
them potentially, to contribute this year for us in order to continue to
make progress, in my opinion. It may not be the case, but some of those
guys that were out there are going to play against the high-level
competition potentially. What I’m looking for though is to continue to
be a disciplined football team throughout to see high effort and part of
discipline is playing with good technique. We did some things as far as
discipline was concerned; we didn’t have a lot of dumb penalties, we
played fairly smart, it looked like the effort was real good throughout
the game, even the guys that played a lot of snaps. But the tackling and
some of those things are unacceptable and they have to improve. I’ve
got a feeling that a couple of those guys could be guys that need to
help us as we go forward. We need to be better and we need to work on
some of those fundamental things.”

On the lack of off-season training contributing to the poor tackling
:
“I don’t know that the off-season program has anything to do with
tackling. We’ve haven’t tackled a lot but we’ve coached it and we’ve
taught it in individual drills and had a bunch of work in that area, but
it is still unacceptable. That’s one of our points of emphasis for our
defensive team going into this year. We felt that we had to be a better
tackling team. The missed tackles hurt us in key spots last year and for
us to improve, that has to change.”

On deciding who would not see the field tonight: “There were a
lot of different factors. Some physical conditioning, ability, some guys
had some nicks and things where we just didn’t feel like putting them
into a game situation. Some we were trying to find out a bit more about,
especially in the deeper, more stacked positions where we had more guys
to look at. There were a lot of different variables but we had a plan
for each and every guy and, as far as I could tell, we followed it. We
just have to be better as a football team from start to finish.”

On the quarterbacks: “I saw that they can run for their lives.
Both of them have some scrambling ability. That’s an area where we have
been deficient as far as off of scrambles making plays, as far as what I
think the standard is. We didn’t do it again today, which was
disappointing. But those guys...you need to give them some time and I
didn’t feel like they were holding the ball. It was pretty much a jail
break almost every time we dropped back. But the quarterback’s job is to
make it work. They’re tough, they looked like they competed the entire
time, they didn’t give up, those are good things.”

On the effect poor tackling will have later one:
“I think something
you have to be careful of as coaches and players is you can’t accept
certain things and a poor tackling team is not something we want on our
resume ever. Right now it’s on there for this year and a little bit of
last year. What’s important is that these guys and our staff recognize
some of those areas that were blaring and that we get to work. Time’s
limited and we’ve got a bunch to do.”

On T Jared Gaither competing for a starting position: “He and WR
Keary Colbert are guys we’re excited about having in here. We’ve danced
around with Keary Colbert a number of times here in the last few years
and he’s a guy that’s an interesting story that was out of football but
coaching; a guy that I really liked coming out, smart inside potential
receiver which we don’t have a ton of on campus. He looks like he has a
chance to come in and compete. Gaither is great competition. I’ve seen
him play both spots; I think he’s capable. We’ve got to get him into
football shape and try to get him into a position where he can compete. I
think from what I’ve seen on tape he’s got a chance to compete at
either side potentially.”

What I took from Fridays game...

QB: Cant say much about Cassel. He fumbled a snap from Hudson I believe..but im sure thats expected since he'll be taking snaps from Weigmann in the regular season. Palko didnt impress me at all. Guy has below average arm strength and accuracy. Idk how he's even competing for a spot. Stanzi looked good though. He looked good in the pocket. He was able to look downfield while moving and avoiding the rush. His ball placement was good on a couple passes. Liked what I saw from him.

RB: Cant say much for Charles. Jones looked alright on his 1 big run. Im afraid Jackie Battle is a likely cut at this point. With now 3 power backs in Jones, McClain, and Bannon..i dont see how theres room for Battle. Bannons a big dude..I'd like to keep him and see where he goes.

WR: Liked what I saw from Baldwin on his few plays. He stuck with the ball on the tipped pass..alot of players would have likely given up on that. He didnt and almost made an amazing catch. Then he ran what I believe was a slant and made a good catch from Stanzi for about 10. Nobody else really shined.

OL: Starters looked alright. Backups looked a little more concerning.

Defense: I didnt really see anything that impressed me too much honestly. Justin Cole had a nice sack on a perfect blitz. Kid looks like he's improved since last year. I saw Justin Houston flying around the field whether it was in pursuit of a runner or pressuring the QB. Quinten Lawrence actually had a nice pass deflection. Other than that I really didnt see much. I dont think any of our starting DL played this game.

Overall I cant really cant judge anything at this point. We played without most of our starters. It was basically a scrimmage for us. Im not gonna jump ship already like most of these silly Chiefs fans who are whinning over losing a preseason game. Im looking forward to these next 3 games though to see how our starters play because im sure Haley will have them in a few series for our next game against Baltimore.

I dont think any of our starting DL played. Dorsey, Gregg, and Jackson all sat out if I remember correctly.

Going back and watching the game again, I liked what i saw from Allen Bailey. He was double teamed a couple times but he never lost the battle at the line of scrimmage. Don't think he ever put up a pass rush, but the guy looks like a bull!

I thought Dorsey started the game. I may be wrong, but what a depressing opener. I figured we would see a quarter of football from the starters. I was wrong.

I hope Cassel looks better soon. I just waited way to long in my first ff league draft this year to take a QB and wound up with Ben and Cassel. After looking at week 1 games I have to start Cassel. Of all people I drafted Cassel. Cutler went the pick ahead of me in rnd 13 for my backup so it was down to Cassel and Mcnabb.

Yes... not attempting a pass for a QB is not good.
