You are right they cant change the price of the tag. they can offer him 500k a year and say they have tried to work out a long term contract. I hope he holds out for what he is worth in the real NFL market and nots Hunts market.

Sorry, hes not worth being paid more than any OLB in history. That LB isn't even worth that.

And you don't build a good team by paying someone way too much money. The Patriots under Pioli did a good job of proving that by letting players go and not skipping a beat.

They were good at letting aging vets go when it was time. Hali is still getting better. They paid Brady didnt they? One day its they cant spend big in FA because they want to pay their own, the next its Tamba is too expensive. When is going to be that they are just cheap? Tamba has gotten better every year and hasnt come close to what he will be once we fix the D-line. And he was pretty good at sacking the QB last year. At some point if they dont pay a guy what he is worth they are cheap.

Not being stupid doesn't make you cheap. We managed so sign JC who is one of the best at his positions, and at a position you can find anywhere. Why? Because he isn't making outrageous demands. Also using the Franchise Tag isn't cheap. Hes going to make more this year with that than he would with a long term contract.

Chiefs are looking to pump up pass rush
By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star

ST. JOSEPH | The crucial element to the Chiefs’ pass rush sits somewhere far from training camp at Missouri Western. Tamba Hali, their franchise player, is unsigned.

Until he arrives, the pass rush will be one of the Chiefs’ bigger concerns.

“No,” defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel said simply when asked whether he was satisfied with the pass rush as currently constituted. “Tamba’s not here.

“As soon as Tamba gets here, my pass rush will improve.”

Hali, the AFC’s sack leader last year with 14 1/2 , isn’t the only missing piece. Wallace Gilberry, second on the Chiefs in sacks with seven last season, signed his restricted free-agent contract but can’t begin to practice until Thursday.

Third-round draft pick Justin Houston, an accomplished pass rusher in college at Georgia, is unsigned and not in camp.

Javier Arenas, the nickel back last season, had the most sacks — three — of any player currently practicing with the Chiefs.

The Chiefs are hoping for big seasons again from Hali and Gilberry. Otherwise, their plans for improving the pass rush rest with some unproven players. They remain confident at least some of those players will develop.

“We definitely have more hands on deck than at any time at this point so far, in my opinion,” coach Todd Haley said. “That can all change, but going off what I’ve seen to date, there’s more competition right now and that’s the name of the game. There is more competition, and I do know when there’s more competition, the guys that are playing get better and sometimes you have somebody make a big jump.”

Among veterans, linebackers such as Demorrio Williams, Andy Studebaker and Derrick Johnson are the most logical candidates to help the Chiefs improve their rush.

The Chiefs used Studebaker more as a pass rusher as last season went on, indicating they believe he has potential to help. He’s starting in place of the retired Mike Vrabel at one outside spot, so he could get more than his 2 1/2 sacks from last season.

“I won’t set a bar on Andy because each time we’ve kind of said, ‘He’s this,’ he breaks through that ceiling,” Haley said. “Every time he’s had an opportunity to be out there, he’s made plays.”

Studebaker had big sack numbers in college, getting 30 in 28 games at Division III Wheaton College in Illinois.

“It takes 11 guys to rush the passer,” Studebaker said. “A lot of times we focus on one guy and ask him to save the day, but pass coverage makes sacks, sacks make (interceptions). It’s a team effort. We’re doing stuff every day to get better at it.”

The Chiefs used Williams as a designated pass rusher in some situations last year, and he had one sack.

“Sometimes, because of his tenacious nature, he can impact the quarterback,” Crennel said. “Last year we threw him in there and he was able to get a sack and get some pressure on the quarterback.”

Johnson plays inside linebacker, which limits his chances to rush the quarterback. He’s also excellent in pass coverage, so the Chiefs are taking away a strength when they send him after the passer.

But he also has considerable pass-rushing skills.

“That’s the plan, to get to the quarterback more and have me involved in some exotic rushes,” Johnson said. “Hopefully, I can be involved in that a lot more. If I’m rushing (well), in practice and I’m doing the things I need to do, I’m sure the coaches will call those types of plays more often.”

The Chiefs will look at outside linebacker Cameron Sheffield as a designated pass rusher. Sheffield was an accomplished pass rusher in college at Troy and was drafted last year by the Chiefs in the fifth round.

He missed all last season after receiving a concussion in a preseason game.

Haley said he would be counting on linemen Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson to provide more pass-rush punch. The Chiefs are expecting dramatic improvement from Jackson, a disappointment since joining the Chiefs as a first-round pick two years ago.

“His No. 1 role is eating up linemen and helping stop the run,” Haley said. “He’s a pressure player second. He’s got a couple of years under his belt, so I’m excited to see how it goes with Tyson.

“One of the areas I think it could show up a little bit is in the passing game, whether it’s as a (designated) rush guy or in regular down and distance.”

Powe and Bailey are impressing. Powe whipping Aso, Hudson and Harris. I called him out in the Draft starting in the 3rd round. Each round came and went, and no Powe until the 6th which was the 199th pick i believe. That is the you know what pick? Tom Brady, yes sir! thats a damn good omen. I beleive Pioli has done it again. Powe has a learning disability which caused him to fall quite abit. Not to mention there was a hell of alot of D lineman taken early in the draft. Powe was rated from the 2nd to the 4th. I watched this kid alot in college, he is a damn stud. This kid has the power to take over a game. Some of the draft nuts had him rated as the best 2 gapper in the draft. Gregg is impressed with him already as well. Powe will have a good rookie year.

Why do you compare every player to Brady or Manning? We all know they make a shit load of money and are all-time greats. You can call Pioli cheap the day Tamba signs somewhere else.

Hopefully by the end of the year, yes. But its looking even worse for him now since he wont even sign his contract. Starting from the start of the season has always been unlikely.

Hali did some type of fighting shit last year, seemed to help him out. Well enough that Haley brought him in to work with the team the other day.

Jackson knows this is a very big year for his career in Kansas City. A third-year player must make an impact and do it with consistency and that’s something he did not show in his first two seasons. So when the lockout came and there was no off-season conditioning program with the team, he went out and created his own. He hooked up with a trainer in Atlanta and put in five days a week for three months. The trainer was a fighter in mixed martial arts (MMA) and trained Jackson not as a defensive end, but a potential heavyweight fighter.

“I put my body through some strange situations trying to get prepared for camp,” Jackson said. “There were some tough hours, five days a week for three months. I’m in pretty good shape.”

Now there’s some question as to the name of the MMA fighter that he was training with in Atlanta. Jackson said his name was Diamond Jackson, but investigation showed that Diamond Jackson is a woman, and not an MMA fighter, but a porn star. Later Jackson corrected himself and said he trained with Diamond Jones, who was also called Action Jackson.

Whether Diamond Jackson or Jones, or Action Jackson, the Chiefs defensive end work five days a week for three months paid off. He worked most on improving his agility, his balance and his ability to deliver a blow.

“Lateral quickness was the biggest thing; I gained a lot of lateral quickness training with that guy,” Jackson said. “It was a lot of side-to-side movement, jumping boxes, constant movement of the hands and feet. I think I’m whole lot quicker side-to-side. I was watching film and I see myself getting off (the snap) quicker, more quickly than in the past.”

A couple tweets from Josh Looney - tonights practice.

First TD of the evening goes to Jonathan Baldwin on a leaping crossing pattern in the back of the end zone

Verran Tucker TD catch. Looks a lot like the one he had against Oakland last season

LB Cory Greenwood shows up manning Charles out of the backfield - stride for stride to break up pass

Rodney Hudson showing nice patience in one-on-one blocking drills - not lunging

For the first time in this camp the WRs and DBs went one-on-one, and the star was Dwayne Bowe. Last year's NFL TD catch leader was sharp and made starting CB Brandon Flowers look bad in beating him twice

QB Matt Cassel struggled in the seven-on-seven drill, as he completed just four of 12 passes in the red zone. Cassel threw some away, and he was also high and wide with a couple other passes. Two balls were dropped. It was pretty ugly until he found TE Cody Slate for a pair of TD passes near the end of the drill.

CB Javier Arenas had a good night, knocking own a couple of passes and grabbing a tipped Cassel pass for an INT.
