Plus it sounds like Colbert is one of our best WR's. If he plays anything like he did his rookie year hes a keeper. He could even be better since his rookie year... as long as he stays healthy

This is very concerning. The only silver lining is that we do have a player/coach at WR. He can teach everyone a lot about things like film study and technique while also leading by example on the field.

Chiefs LCB Brandon Flowers says he has not heard anything from the team regarding an umpcoming contract extension.
Flowers is due just $555,000 in this last year of his rookie deal. A ballhawk (nine interceptions, four forced fumbles in three seasons) and man-to-man maven, Flowers has quietly emerged as one of the better corners in football at age 25. He was Pro Football Focus' third overall cornerback in the league last season, ranking second to only Champ Bailey in coverage.

I wish Pioli would just got the fucker done. Its making me nervous that they are going to piss him off. One of the best CBs in football playing for 555,000, what a damn joke!

Happens all the time. Players like that usually get locked up near the end of the season, most of them after the season right before free agency. Theres always the tag too anyways.

Ya but there is only 1 tag. You got 3 players to lock up. Flowers, Bowe, Carr. Get on with it!

I think it's going to be hard to get Bowe signed. The Fitz contract is going to make it difficult for a lot of teams though on WRs.

In what can be seen as a somewhat shocking news, ProFootballTalk.com is reporting that the New England Patriots have released Pro Bowl safety Brandon Meriweather:

Two straight Pro Bowls and 64 appearances in 64 career games ultimately wasn't enough to save safety Brandon Meriweather. The Patriots have parted ways with the first-round pick from the 2007 draft, according to a league source.

Meriweather's status had been the subject of rumor and speculation. He recently downplayed to our good buddy Tom Curran of CSNNE.com the fact that coach Bill Belichick had Meriweather playing during garbage time of the preseason finale.

Meriweather really struggled at times last year, and hadn't looked particularly special during training camp or the preseason. However, most, including myself, figured that when the Patriots released James Sanders last week, that it was likely an indication that Meriweather's status on the roster was safe considering the lack of depth at the the position and his relatively cheap salary. Apparently not.

The question now becomes, what does this mean for the Patriots roster? The top option at strong safety is still Patrick Chung. Barring some sort of disaster, he is a stud who will starting for the Patriots. After Chung, the Patriots have Josh Barrett, Sergio Brown, and James Ihedigbo. All three of those players now look like locks to make the team. The Patriots may also look to bring in outside help. Earlier in the month, the Patriots worked out a handful of safeties, including Darren Sharper, who could be a viable option as a "center field" safety. And hey, Lawyer Milloy's a free agent as well.

Eric Moore is a player who performed really well at the end of last year as a 3-4 outside linebacker. Many expected him to step up and become a starter at the position. When the Patriots began the transition to more 4-man fronts, Moore continued to line up with the starters at defensive end. However, the team brought in the likes of Andre Carter, Mark Anderson, and Shaun Ellis. Those three players are all better pass rushing options. Moore was a guy who was good at a lot of things, but not great at anything. He was outperformed in the preseason by those players. The Patriots could have elected to keep an extra defensive end around, but my feeling is that the team felt that Shaun Ellis / Mike Wright would be playing more defensive end than defensive tackle in the 4-3, making Moore expendable.

Moore might be a good option to have at OLB if Pioli decides he needs one

I would be all for having Merriweather come in. Him and Berry along with Flowers and Carr would be insane. Not to take anything away from Lewis, but he would be a great backup, he would also still see playing time.

We are light at G, OT, ILB. It would be nice to see Merriweather get picked up and bounce Washington or Sabby. Be nice to pick up a OLB like Moore that would bounce Greenwood. We only have 1 reserve guard and tackle on the roster.

I really hope we bring in Merriweather. Sabby and Washington have no business in the NFL.

I'm not a fan of either one of those clowns either. But it appears we are stuck with them for this year.

Everette Brown gets released from the Panthers! Holy Shit rust! If we had taken him in the 1st that year, we would be hating life now. Derrick Thomas he was not to be. I still think he would be alright as a situational 3-4 OLB. If I were Pioli i would work him out to see.

Today ended what will probably be remembered as the worst move of the Marty Hurney era as the Carolina Panthers released DE Everette Brown. Drafted in the second round in 2009, Brown cost the Panthers a 2010 1st round pick as Hurney moved up in the draft to get the Florida State pass rusher. At the time of the selection Brown was thought to be cut from the same cloth as similarly undersized DE Dwight Freeney, but as it turned out he lacked the strength or ability to either rush the passer effectively, or support in the run game. Much like the cuts of Brandon Meriweather and Brandon Tate by New England yesterday this move reeks of the Panthers trying to trade Brown only to not be able to find a partner.

As a replacement the Panthers claimed DE George Selvie off waivers from the St. Louis Rams. A 2010 7th round selection out of South Florida, Selvie played in 16 games last year totaling 21 tackles and 1.5 sacks. At 6'4", 251lbs he's a similarly small DE as Brown, but the Panthers obviously feel like he's a better fit. Furthermore, he does have some familarity with the DL as he played with 2011 3rd round pick Terrell McClain at USF.
