Roger Goodell: Time coming soon to cancel first NFL game due to lockout

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell made clear on Wednesday that a decision for him to start cancelling preseason games because of the lockout is approaching.

"We don't have a date, but obviously that time is coming," Goodell said as owners wrapped up their spring meetings (via PFT).

The league cancelled its annual rookie symposium this week. It was the first formal casualty of the lockout that began on March 12. The league is mired in a labor impasse, with a hearing at the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals on June 3 set to determine the validity of the lockout.

"We're getting close enough where those will have to be considerations," Goodell said of considering cancelling preseason games. "Obviously we would prefer to get a negotiated agreement so we don't have to make those decisions."

The preseason is scheduled to kick off on Aug. 7, with the regular season scheduled on Sept. 8.

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay told the AP on Tuesday that he thinks a labor deal must by reached by July 4 to avoid putting the regular season in jeopardy. He also warned that even lost preseason games would have dire consequences in terms of lost revenue to the league.

"If you miss those preseason games, or a game or two (of the regular schedule), or start late," Irsay told the AP, "you have lost significant money, in excess of $1 billion."

The league has built a cushion into its regular season schedule in which it can start three weeks late and still play a full 16-game schedule.

The players and the NFL have been in mediation at times over the past few weeks, but there has been no sign that they are close to a deal. The appeals court could order an end to the lockout, or could launch the league into an even murkier immediate future if it rules favorably for the NFL.

Goodell reiterated that the more time the lockout lasts, the harder it will be for a deal to be reached.

"The longer it goes the more damage is done to the game and the more revenue's down and that means less money that can be divided between the parties," Goodell said.

He also said that the league has palpably felt the anger of fans since the lockout began.

"It's a noticeable change," Goodell said, via CBS. "I think you guys are aware of it -- our ratings were down in the draft for example. Roughly four million people -- that's a noticeable decrease ... about a 10% decrease as I recall."

They need Doty to rule soon so the owners can appeal to the 8th again.

A deal will be reached if Doty rules in favor of the owners. But chances of that are slim.
