Source: Highly regarded passer shines during pro day
2 days ago
by AdamCaplan

Former TCU QB Andy Dalton participated in the school’s pro day on Friday.

Dalton, according to one personnel source on hand, went 49 of 52, and two of the incompletions were dropped passes. Pro day performances shouldn’t be overvalued because they are a small part of the process, but he did quite well. And 39 of the passes were 17 yards or more.

On one throw, he rolled out right and completed a 60-yard pass on the run, which is important when you look at his arm strength. The one legitimate knock on Dalton is his perceived lack of ideal arm strength. However, there are certain times when he has shown better than expected power on his throws.

In an interesting aside to Dalton’s performance, WR Jeremy Kerley hit Dalton on a 50-yard pass on final passing drill. Kerley was a great high school baseball player. Kerley has an extremely strong arm from talking to personnel sources who studied him as a high school player.

During last month’s NFL Combine, Dalton connected on a few deeper sideline throws of more than 40 yards.

During this year’s Rose Bowl game against the University of Wisconsin, Dalton made several solid power throws, which opened some eyes of several personnel evaluators.

A source confirmed Dalton has upcoming private workouts scheduled with the Chicago Bears (Mar. 17), Kansas City Chiefs, Cleveland Browns (next week) and New England Patriots.

He’s also expected to visit the Cincinnati Bengals, Minnesota Vikings and Tennessee Titans among the teams that want to bring him in for a closer look.

Dalton is my favorite mid round QB prospect. He was a winner at TCU, unlike a lot of quarterbacks that have been very hyped in recent years and failed miserably when making the jump to the NFL. But do you really want a ginger running the offense?

I like Dalton also. Sometimes there are a few gingers capable of being good football players.

By Brady Henderson

TCU's Andy Dalton hasn't been mentioned much in the discussion of potential first round picks. Most analysts rank him outside the top three quarterbacks in this year's draft class and project him to fall to the second or third round.

ESPN's Trent Dilfer believes that's because teams are playing it coy with their interest in Dalton.

"One of the reasons why he hasn't generated as much momentum and hype is because what personnel and coaches do at this time of the year when they've kind of settle on who they want, they're going to shut up about that guy," Dilfer said Wednesday on Brock & Salk. "You'll hear a lot of good stuff about (Arkansas' Ryan) Mallett in the next couple weeks because they want to use him as a smoke screen. You're going to hear a lot of good stuff about (Florida State's Christian) Ponder because they want to use him as a smoke screen.

"At the end of the day, the good quarterback people in this league -- I will not be wrong here -- are going to be wanting Andy Dalton late in the first round or early second round if he happens to fall that far."

This doesn't look too good for the chances of getting him in the mid rounds

From PFT:

From the “Now I’ve heard everything” department: An NFL coach says he’s concerned about whether TCU quarterback Andy Dalton can lead an NFL team — not because of the content of his character but because of the color of his hair.

Peter King’s story in this week’s Sports Illustrated about the way teams scrutinize quarterbacks concludes with that detail: An unnamed coach couldn’t think of any great read-headed quarterbacks and admitted to thinking that Dalton, a redhead, might be lacking something that quarterbacks need.

“Has there ever been a red-headed quarterback in the NFL who’s really done well?” the coach asked. “It sounds idiotic, but is there any way that could be a factor? We’ve wondered.”

The coach is right: It does sound idiotic, like something Eric Cartman would have suggested in the South Park episode “Ginger Kids.”

But it just goes to show how intense the scrutiny of players can get in the days leading up to the draft. If coaches are looking at hair color, they’re looking at everything.

That's funny shit!
