Officially, Julio Jones more than 0.1 seconds faster than A.J. Green in 40
Posted by Mike Florio on February 27, 2011, 5:58 PM EST
Julio Jones

The official 40 times for the receivers have been released. And what had appeared like a small gap between Julio Jones and A.J. Green has gotten ever larger.

Jones officially ran a blazing 4.39. Green mustered a respectable 4.5.

Two of the wideouts finished the fastest of all with a 4.37 — Abilene Christian’s Edmond Gates and Fort Valley State’s Ricardo Lockette.

Meanwhile, former Maryland wideout Torrey Smith, who declined during last week’s visit to PFT Live to offer any prediction beyond “I’m fast, not slow,” was definitely fast, racking up a 4.43.

Though the 40 times mean a lot more when comparing wideouts than, say, offensive linemen, running in a straight line in a T-shirt and shorts has only a loose correlation to a guy’s speed while wearing gear and jockeying for position with a defensive back or two and trying to track down the ball.

For example, a guy from Mississippi Valley State ran a 4.6 in 1985. And things worked out just fine at the next level for Jerry Rice.

A.J. Green, Julio Jones crank up the speed in Indy
Posted by Mike Florio on February 27, 2011, 9:58 AM EST
A.J. Green

The players regard as the top two wideouts on the board solidified their positions on Sunday.

Georgia receiver A.J. Green ran, unofficially, a 4.48 and then a 4.51.

Alabama’s Julio Jones cranked out a 4.43, and then an eye-popping 4.39.

The fastest time came from Abilene Christian’s Edmund Gates, who covered 120 feet in 4.35 seconds. But Jones ability to outrun Green could shake things up at receiver.

Don't fall in love with the combine. AJ Green is still the better receiver.

Shit. I wanted Jones before the combine. But I wouldn't mind giving Haley someone thats bigger, and faster that the best receiver in this draft to work with.

Don't get me wrong. Jones falling all the way to #21 would be a fantastic scenario, but AJ Green is the better receiver.

There is no way in hell Jones falls that far. Jones will be a Ram.

And now news comes out that Jones did all this with a fractured bone in his foot! He will require a screw inserted into it. That is pretty impressive. Probably vaulted easily into the top 10

I dont think he is around at 21 either. Its a shame because this guy fits our style of offense. Hes a hell of a blocker, and freaky fast!

Sims-Walker just cant stay healthy that is his problem. If he stays healthy he can be very productive.

I think we have a pretty good conditioning program, our players have been more healthy under Haley. Also he seems to do alright working with recievers. I would love to add Sims-Walker

Sims-Walker would be a great reciever for Haley to train and use to stretch the field.
